"Beat & Reverse" Diabetes Solution

STEP 1: Start your day with a Super Breakfast (which is based upon the Super Meal Model®). This type of vegetable-based breakfast provides a more sustained level of energy and key nutrients that diabetics (and non-diabetics) are missing when they consume the more traditional grain-based breakfast. Some of those key nutrients (within the 5 key super foods) include Omega-3 EFAs, carotenoids, chlorophyll, potassium, chromium, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, fiber, and water. In addition, by avoiding the grain-based breakfast, diabetics and non-diabetics will not experience the mid-morning “crash” or craving for processed food/beverages. Over time, this type of "super" meal will support blood glucose stabilization, cell repair and the regulation of the body's production and utilization of insulin.

Super Breakfast

  • 2 cups steamed spinach (or 1½ cups steamed broccoli)
  • Optional: Add one-half of an orange/yellow/red pepper (sliced) to steam with the vegetable.
  • 3 oz. baked wild salmon (or 3 oz. sardines, or an Omega-3 organic egg)
  • 1 ½ Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil (add on top of the vegetables after steaming)
  • Add organic spices, including raw/aged garlic, to season the vegetables/fish
  • 24 oz. filtered water (or 16 oz. filtered water, 1 cup white tea)
  • 1-2 cups raw vegetable juice (optional)
  • Optional: Add 1 scoop of super greens powder (e.g. wheat/barley grass) to a glass of water or raw juice.

Salad
A Super Salad with Avocado: Beat & Reverse Diabetes

These super foods perform the same function as the drugs, but without the side effects!

The good news here is that if you embrace these super foods, you will be able to change your body's chemistry such that several months down the road, you will be able to enjoy your bread, pasta, ice cream, or potato chips -- without having the same adverse reaction to your blood sugar!

Of course, that doesn't mean you can go hog-wild, but, at least, you will be able to once again enjoy life and not be worried about eating the 'wrong' food.

Super Snack
  • An apple (or pear/other whole fruit)
  • A handful of walnuts/almonds
  • A glass of filtered water

Super Lunch

  • A small salad (with Romaine lettuce, baby spinach, sprouts, onion, celery, cucumber, tomato, tuna, boiled egg, olive oil, apple cider vinegar)
  • Or,  a bean salad, bean soup, or turkey sandwich
  • A glass of filtered water

Super Dinner

  • 1 cup steamed Brussel sprouts and 2 cups steamed broccoli
  • 5 oz. baked skinless chicken breast (or 5 oz. wild salmon)
  • ½ red pepper, mushrooms, spices
  • 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil (add after steaming vegetables)
  • 1 slice of sprouted grain bread (1½ tsp. extra virgin coconut oil)
  • 24 oz. filtered water (or 24 oz. white tea)
  • 1-2 cups raw vegetable juice
  • Optional Dinner: a raw salad that contains the aforementioned foods with Romaine lettuce, ground salba seed and organic salad dressing

Other Super Snacks

  • Kashi crackers, organic chips with peanut butter, almond butter, or cheese slices.
  • Whole fruit (blueberries, blackberries, apple, pear, banana, grapes), with a handful of nuts such as walnuts and/or almonds.

  • Small Salads: Romaine lettuce, tuna, boiled egg, olive oil, apple cider vinegar
  • Soup (Small Bowl): black bean, chickpeas, kidney bean, lima bean
  • Yogurt (low-fat plain) with wheat germ
  • Note: Always have a glass of filtered water before or after your meal.

More Super Meals
If you want more recipes of super meals, snacks, and even desserts, then, get the diabetes cookbook.

To learn more about how to prepare super meals and snacks, and desserts; and, how to transform your favorite meals into super meals, with one or two minor changes, get the "Favorite Foods" PDF.

Diabetes Nutritional Strategy

The 5 "Dead" Foods
Try to reduce and eventually avoid eating the refined, processed, and starchy "dead" foods such as white bread, wheat bread (made with enriched flour), white rice, white potatoes, corn, cereal, clear vegetable oils (e.g. corn, soybean, sunflower, safflower) and foods that contain high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oil, and refined sugar.

In addition, try to avoid non-prescription drugs, prescription drugs, and recreational drugs, especially alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, heroin, and marijuana.

Read Chapter 6 for a complete list of the "dead" foods that you need to avoid so that you can save your hard-earned money to buy the foods that will help to repair your body. Once your body is repaired, you will save even more money because your body won't require as much fuel (food) to produce the necessary energy; and, you won't be spending money on OTC drugs, prescription drugs, doctor appointments, and chemical-laden "dead" foods.

Read Chapter 6 for a complete list of "super" foods, and Chapter 7 for the components of the Super Meal Model and examples of super meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Also, read Chapter 17 for food tips and recipe ideas. Gradually increase your consumption of super meals to facilitate the body's cleansing and detoxification processes.

Use the Alternative Healthier Foods Table in the book's Appendix to identify healthier versions of your favorite foods and to help in your transitioning from eating poorly to eating more healthy -- without feeling deprived of your favorite foods. Because if you feel deprived, you will revert to eating poorly.

Cleanse/Detoxification
If you want to accelerate your body's repair process, next to eating the 5 super foods, the best thing that you can do is to perform a periodic cleanse/detox of your body, especially the colon, liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and pancreas. Please note that most wellness programs don't even mention cleanse/detoxing, and those that do fail to mention the pancreas!

Nutritional Supplementation
First of all, if you're taking any supplements, save your money and don't buy anymore vitamins -- until your blood glucose level and health have improved.

Once you have implemented your super meal program, work with a wellness coach to perform a nutritional gap analysis to identify any critical nutrients you may not be acquiring through your meals.

Read Chapter 8 to use the 7 key criteria that will help you identify superior food-based nutritional supplements that will provide the critical missing nutrients.

Of course, always talk with your doctor first, especially if you are taking any drugs such as Coumadin (a blood thinner) that may interact with some supplements that perform a similar function, e.g. Omega-3s.

If you would like to learn the 7 most critical vitamins/nutritional supplements for a diabetic, get
the "Nutritional Supplements" PDF.

Change is difficult, but we can help you overcome the 3 major barriers and adopt The 7 Habits of a Healthy Lifestyle.

STEP 4: Start to exercise, but start slowly -- by walking 15-20 minutes a day before you go to work, during lunch, or after dinner.

Note: Most people hate to exercise including the author Smile -- so, at least try to integrate some form of movement into your daily routine. For example, shopping, lawn mowing, gardening, golf, and hunting are ways to increase your physical activity.

Key Point: Some forms of exercises (i.e. resistance training) perform the same function as taking the diabetic drugs, but without the side effects!

STEP 5a: Perform blood glucose testing to verify that our Super Breakfast protocol is working.  Now, change your dinner, following our Super Dinner protocol:

-- 1 cup steamed Brussel sprouts and 2 cups steamed broccoli
-- 5 oz. baked skinless chicken breast (or 5 oz. wild salmon)
-- ½ red pepper, mushrooms, spices
-- 1½ tbsp. extra virgin olive oil (add after steaming vegetables)
-- 1 slice of sprouted grain bread (optional)
-- 24 oz. filtered water, 8 oz. white tea
Optional meal: a raw salad that contains the aforementioned foods with Romaine lettuce and homemade salad dressing (extra virgin olive oil, organic apple cider vinegar)

Note: This type of dinner sets the stage to help the body cleanse/detoxify and repair itself while you sleep.

STEP 5b: Snacking is one of the areas that we all struggle with during the day and after dinner. Here are some quick examples of Super Snacks:
-- 1 apple, a handful of walnuts/almonds, a glass of water
-- 1 cup of dark grapes, a handful of trail mix/pulse food (nuts/seeds), water
-- 12 oz. organic/raw juice, mix in 2 tbsp. of ground flaxseed
-- 1 cup of plain organic yogurt, add flaxseed, blueberries; glass of water
-- 4-5 whole grain crackers, 2 oz. canned salmon/tuna, water

STEPs 6-10: Follow the other steps on this web page concerning blood glucose testing, doctor visits, emotional support, and exercise.

Struggling with Your Diabetes?
Are you still struggling with your diabetes and blood glucose control even though you have the book? If you are, do not despair. There are 7 reasons why people are unable to get their diabetes under control even after they get the book:
  1. Time: They haven't had time to read the book, or make the changes.
  2. Motivation: They had all the intentions to change their diet and start exercising, but life, work, and family got in the way; or, they got bored with the same meals.
  3. Stress/Support: They had a lot of stress in their life; and, they didn't get the emotional support from their partner, family, work, doctor and community.
  4. Comprehension: They didn't understand some parts of the book; or, they didn't understand how to use their blood glucose data to better manage their diabetes.
  5. Drugs: They were taking too many drugs, which caused more damage and prevented the body from repairing itself.
  6. Belief: They still believe that the drugs would do more good than harm.
  7. Finances: They felt that they couldn't afford to buy healthy foods.

To overcome these 7 reasons, follow The "Get Well" steps.

Overcoming the Excuses

Spiritual Health & Emotional Support
Do not underestimate the power of your inner spirit!  Tap into that power to help change the negative talktrack in your head and inhibit the influences of the negative people around you.

There are 3 major reasons why we resist change. Don't let these "excuses" stop you!

Use one or more of the following tips to help reduce the stress in your life and improve your health emotionally:

  • Identify a strong motive for getting healthy, e.g. financial, your children, family, quality of life, religious, disdain towards drugs, fear of a painful death. Ensure that your motive is strong enough to overcome the setbacks you’re going to have during your journey.
  • Embrace change and the adversity that you will face during your journey. Adversity will build your character or reveal it.
  • Ensure you obtain at least 6-7 hours of quality deep sleep each night.
  • Find quiet time for yourself each day, even if it's only 15 minutes.
  • Avoid the emotional vampires and toxic relationships that drain your hope and your soul.
  • Look for ways to use your talent and your passion to help your family and/or your community.
  • Join an ADA-sponsored or church-sponsored diabetic support group as part of your support system.
  • Read Chapter 13 for more ideas about reducing stress and improving your emotional well-being.
  • Laugh! Laugh! Laugh! Laughter is a wonderful stress-reducer. Laughter relieves muscular tension providing a discharge of nervous excitement. It improves breathing, regulates the heartbeat and pumps endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers) into the bloodstream.
  • Let go of the anger, jealousy, and envy in your life. These negative emotions trigger the release of stress hormones and weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to disease.
  • Listen to positve and powerful messages that will help to motivate you. Here's an example of a positive message that reminds me of my father, who convinced us that 'failure was for weak people and not an option for his kids'. He felt that you had to be höngry if you wanted to succeed at something. This audio clip was a reminder of my father preachin' at us.

Food for Thought: There is a fine line between denial and faith: Denial is believing you can’t win the battle against the disease because of all the facts. Faith is believing that you can win the battle despite all of the facts.

During the 1990s I volunteered as a math tutor for one of the local high schools. Because I had been blessed with a father who drilled mathematics into us, and great teachers who taught me the "patterns of mathematics", I was able to help many students and give them their hope back. During many of these tutoring sessions, I shared some inspirational quotes that I had come across over the years -- from people such as Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, and Billy Graham. Maybe one of these quotes will help you.

Exercise
If you're like most people, you hate exercise for one or more of the following reasons:
  • It takes up time from your busy schedule.
  • It's boring and doesn't appear to provide any benefits.
  • Your muscles are sore the next day.
  • You're hungry after you exercise so you eat extra food.
  • You don't lose any significant amount of weight after exercising for a couple weeks.

The key to exercise is to:

  • Figure out how to increase your daily physical activity.
  • Find a friend to go walking or jogging with after meals.
  • Find a fun activity such as gardening, skiing, swimming, skating, etc.
  • Start slowly exercising for 15-20 minutes every day, and increase gradually to 30-45 minutes every day. Remember: Consistency is the key to a successful exercise regimen of aerobics, weight resistance and stretching.
  • Read Chapter 10 for more details about exercise.

If you just don't have time to exercise, and would like to learn how to perform specific body movements and reduce your exercise to less than 15 minutes a day, sign up for a health coaching session or get the "Exercise & Physical Activity" PDF.

Blood Glucose Testing
Blood glucose (BG) testing and blood glucose monitors are the most powerful diagnostic tools available to a diabetic today. Unfortunately, blood glucose testing is misunderstood and is not utilized properly. As a result, BG testing creates more fear and anxiety instead of knowledge and hope. Consequently, many Type 2 diabetics only test their blood glucose once a day -- because they don't want to be reminded they're diabetic and they don't really know what to do with a high blood glucose reading.

Here are some key steps to follow to help you take full advantage of the most powerful diagnostic tool available to diabetics -- the blood glucose meter.
  • Obtain the insight of someone who understands how to really use the data -- like an engineer.
  • At a minimum, get at least one complete physical every year, and obtain a copy of the blood work from your doctor.
  • If you are diabetic, obtain the necessary diagnostic tools to test your blood glucose at least 3-4 times a day.
  • Buy a journal/notebook to keep track of what you eat, when you exercise, how you feel, your blood glucose readings, your doctor appointments, etc.
  • Read Chapter 11 so that you overcome the anxiety and fear associated with blood glucose testing.
  • Read Chapter 11 to learn how to prepare for doctor appointments and work with your doctor.
  • Also, read Chapter 11 for a complete list of the critical tests that you should be getting (to ensure a correct diagnosis), e.g. FBG, HbA1C, BP, homocysteine, TC, TG, HDL, insulin, waist size.

If you want to learn how to use blood glucose testing to control and reverse your Type 2 diabetes, get the "Power of BG Testing" PDF.

Working with Your Doctor
One of the best ways to manage your diabetes is to develop an effective working partnership with your doctor. Your doctor’s role in this partnership is to provide medical advice, offer treatment options and recommend resources. Your role is to monitor your symptoms and blood glucose readings, report them accurately and do what you can to manage your disease on a day-to-day basis.

Doctor appointments are very important, but most people come ill-prepared to take full advantage of the time with their doctor. Then, they complain about the doctor not taking enough time with them. Or, they don’t ask the doctor any pertinent questions; or, they don’t bother to take any notes and forget what the doctor told them. The doctor could spend more time with them, but they must first take full advantage of the time that they have with their doctor. Then, they will be pleasantly surprised how well their doctor responds when they take a more active role in their health.

Use the procedures in Chapter 11 as a guideline to help improve the effectiveness of your appointments and the relationship with your doctor. If you are unable to establish a better partnership with your doctor, be honest and straighforward and let him/her know your concerns.

Warning: It is also important that, if you are taking any diabetic drugs, that your doctor is willing to help you wean off these drugs. Drugs create a chemical dependency within your body that makes it difficult to just stop taking the drugs. In many cases, the diabetic drugs lead to insulin injections, which create an "insulin addiction" trap -- if you take insulin injections for an extended number of years, this sends a signal to the pancreas to reduce its own production of insulin. Then, without the insulin from the pancreas, your body becomes dependent on the insulin injections for the rest of your life!

If you are frustrated with your doctor, you can learn the 3 most important questions to always ask your doctor and learn how to get your doctor to work for you. More importantly, learn what your doctor may not be telling you that could lead to liver or kidney failure! Get the Doctor Visits & Critical Blood Tests PDF for more information.
