Diabetes Health Coaching for You

Author Sidebar: I never planned to get into health coaching. At the time I published my book, I was a little naive and felt that the book would be enough. Wow! Did I have a lot to learn! :-)

Sometimes people would call or email me asking questions about the book. After answering their questions, some of them would buy the book, but, others had more questions and wanted more personal guidance.

Eventually, I relented and started providing some health coaching sessions as long as customers read the book first. I would tell customers that it would be a lot less expensive for them to read the book first because they wouldn't need as many health coaching sessions.

Ironically, by providing health coaching and talking to diabetics, it actually helped me as much as it helped them! This is a little embarrassing to admit, but the health coaching sessions would remind me of things that I also needed to do because I had stopped doing them either due to being too busy or being just plain lazy. :-)

These talks also motivated me when I would hear from a customer who had read my book and improved their diabetes. It's ironic -- I wrote a book to help others, yet, the book was helping me through other diabetics who would call or email to thank me or to ask some questions.

Similar to the help I received via the book, these health coaching sessions provided a similar drive and motivation to me. After most sessions, the person would be very gracious and thank me, but, I would also thank them. But, I don't think they truly understood how valuable their talks were to me.

So, you see -- all of us struggle with staying focused, eating right, exercising, going grocery shopping, etc. even when we know it's good for us and the right thing to do!

So, I have to thank many of you because your questions and requests for help have turned out to be beneficial to me as well.

The 7 Ways A Diabetes Health Coach Can Help You With Managing Your Diabetes

Here are seven ways that a diabetes health coach will help you to make lasting lifestyle changes that will enable use to perform effective diabetes management so that you can controlType 2 diabetes.

Focus on your whole being: Health coaches take a holistic approach to working one-on-one and understanding the science behind diabetes, nutrition and behavior modification. Health coaches understand the emotional, physical, behavioral, nutritional and lifestyle factors that are needed to enhance your overall health and well-being.

Establish a connection: One of the most important things a health coach does is work to establish a bond built on empathy, respect, and trust with every client. To allow for a successful and effective coach-client relationship, health coaches establish an understanding of the biological, psychological, behavioral and emotional needs and characteristics of you as an individual. That understanding begins by identifying your current health through open communication and active listening.

Set Health Goals: With an understanding of your diabetes and your personal interests, past successes and failures, your attitudes and beliefs about health and nutrition, and your readiness to change, a health coach will work with you to establish realistic goals. Through this effective approach, a health coach will help you to take vague ideas and aspirations and transform them into reality.

Retrain the way you think: Health coaches help clients change their negative talk-track and establish a positive talk track showing positive results and by identifying negative, irrational and erroneous beliefs.

Overcome barriers: From lack of time to financial constraints, inclement weather, family discourse, injury or medical issues, there are a number of nutritional, environmental and lifestyle factors that often serve as external barriers to people trying to improve their diabetes and overall health. Coupled with internal barriers such as low self-esteem and intimidation from their doctors, a health coach will work with you to diffuse anxieties and identify misconceptions that may be standing in the way of you reaching your goals. A good health coach will arm you with the skills you need to cope with current and future barriers and provide you with strategies to help you get back on track following temporary slip ups.

Become empowered and self-reliant: While this may seem counterintuitive, the ultimate goal of a health coach is to empower you to become self-reliant by adopting healthy nutritional and lifestyle habits. From helping you create or maintain an environment that fosters success to finding and implementing a support system, a health coach is committed to arming you with the tools you need to succeed in reaching your health goals.

Make it a lifestyle: Health coaches enable individuals to see the value in reaching their health-related goals and building a true connection between diabetes management, nutritional changes and activities of daily living. A health coach will empower you to take ownership of your experience and create positive, lasting lifestyle changes that enhance what you do in the in everyday life.
