Alternative Treatments: How to Control and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes into Remission

Author's Sidebar: When I was in the hospital, the nurses were very helpful and supportive in helping me to understand what I needed to do to control my diabetes.

Although I truly appreciated their help, I must admit that I was  overwhelmed by the amount of information that I had to learn just to get through one day of being diabetic!  

This is one of the reasons why I am so impressed by children who have learned how to control their Type 1 diabetes. There is no way that I would have been able to handle this disease as a child! Are you kidding me?

A shout out to my daughter (Cynthia)! While I was in the hospital, she took a lot of notes when the doctors and nurses stopped by to see me each day. By the time I left the hospital, she had a huge notebook of information and things that I needed to do.

And, then, there was my mother and my sister (Margo) who did most of the grocery shopping, meal planning, cooking, and taking care of the house. They even did the dishes! :-)

As I look back now, the support that I received from the doctors, nurses, my mother, daughter and sister all contributed to me being able to better control my diabetes and live a healthier life.

Ironically, their help also allowed me to help other diabetics when I worked as a community volunteer for the American Diabetes Association (ADA). And, that, eventually led me to write my first book  called Death to Diabetes, which has helped thousands of diabetics around the world.

More importantly, recent medical research and multiple clinical studies have proven that Type 2 diabetes can be reversed into remission, similar to what happens when some cancer patients are able to put their cancer into remission.

In addition to this medical research, my experiences with recovering from my diabetes and helping other diabetics taught me that there were many different alternative strategies to control my diabetes.

Alternative Treatment Strategies: How to Control and Reverse  Your Type 2 Diabetes into Remission 

Here are some of the many alternative treatment strategies that you can use to more effectively control and reverse your Type 2 diabetes. And, these strategies can eventually help to reduce your dependency on so many medications so that you can put your diabetes into remission:

  • Educate yourself
  • Eat healthy foods, especially vegetables
  • Avoid processed foods and fast foods
  • Exercise on a consistent basis
  • Perform blood glucose testing
  • Take a vitamin/mineral supplement
  • Cleanse and detox periodically
  • Get some emotional support
  • Visit your doctor

In order to put your diabetes into full remission, you must maintain your blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in their normal ranges for a minimum of 6 consecutive months without the need for any diabetic medication. 

You can achieve partial remission by keeping your blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c in their normal ranges for at least 3  months.

However, in order to keep  your diabetes in remission, you must continue to eat healthy foods so that your blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c remain within their normal ranges. Otherwise, your diabetes and high blood sugar levels will return. 

Please Note: However, in some cases, if your diabetes has done significant damage to your tissues and organs, then, you may not be able to reverse your Type 2 diabetes into a full remission. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try -- any improvement is better than none.

1. Educate yourself about Type 2 diabetes and do some research.

Knowledge is very powerful. There is nothing more powerful than understanding your disease and how it affects you. The more you understand, the easier it is to figure out how to improve your health.

In today's busy world, you may find it difficult to find the time to take a class and learn more about your diabetes. But, if you don't find the time, your diabetes will make the time. :-)

So, don't wait for something catastrophic to happen before you start paying attention to your diabetes. Be proactive, and take action now:

  • Take a class about diabetes and nutrition.
  • Do some medical research about alternative treatments.
  • Join a diabetic support group.
  • Watch some videos on YouTube about diabetes .
  • Visit a website or a blog about diabetes.
  • Talk to someone who's been successful with their diabetes.
  • Download an ebook about diabetes.
  • Read a book about diabetes.

As you can see, most of these activities are free and only  require some time on your part.


So, who are the people who don't want you to have power when it comes to controlling your diabetes?

It's the pharmaceutical companies! 

You see, the more you learn about how to control your diabetes naturally (with diet and exercise), the less you will become dependent on the pharmaceutical drugs.

July 7, 2016 Death to Diabetes is one of those books that can help you whether you have diabetes or not … I was intrigued and tried the plan. It worked. I felt better, and I lost weight. My joints didn't hurt as much. When I went to the doctor for my annual blood work, I had better results than I had in years! It was amazing!

I highly recommend (the book) to people with diabetes and folks who just want to help their body work better. It is a winner!

This book has really changed my life. When I bought it four months ago my blood sugar was high, I was on metformin 2000g a day  … Once I started the program I have never looked back, in fact it has turned my life around, I am no longer on metformin, my A1C is going down …

2. Eat lots of healthy foods to control and reverseType 2 diabetes

I think that most people know that you have to eat healthy foods in order to better control their  Type 2 diabetes and possibly reverse their diabetes and put it into remission.

I remember the following between a mother and her young daughter in a grocery store:

Daughter: Mommy, are you okay?

Mother:  Yeah, I'm fine. Mommy's  just a little tired.

Daughter: Mommy, do you think it was the soda you drank at McDonald's?

Mother (smiling & chuckling): Yeah, that was not a good idea.

Daughter gives her thermos jug to her mother and says: Here, Mommy, you can have some of my water.

I just smiled and thought: If a young child knows what is healthy to eat, why do we as adults struggle so much? :-)

Here are some of the healthy foods that you should be eating on a regular basis:

  • Green, leafy vegetables, i.e. broccoli, spinach, Brussels sprouts, kale, Romaine lettuce, celery
  • Bright-colored vegetables, i.e. red/yellow/orange bell peppers, tomatoes, red cabbage
  • Some whole fruits, i.e. blueberries, apples, lemons
  • Fiber-rich foods, i.e. vegetables, beans, nuts
  • Healthy fats, i.e. extra virgin olive oil, virgin coconut oil, avocado
  • Lean protein, i.e. wild salmon, organic eggs (grass-fed), organic skinless chicken breast, nuts, seeds 

Eating healthy foods on a consistent basis may be a challenge, but, you'll feel better in the long run. For me, eating healthy was easy because my mother and daughter prepared all my meals when I got out of the hospital. :-)

So, start eating healthier and you'lllive a better life.

3. Avoid eating processed foods, junk food and fast food to control Type 2 diabetes.

I'm sure that most of us realize that the great-tasting food from McDonald's or Kentucky Fried chicken may not be the best food for a person with Type 2 diabetes. :-)

These foods tend to spike your blood sugar and insulin levels while robbing your body of key nutrients that it needs to control your diabetes. 

In addition, these foods tend to cause hunger cravings, weight gain and an increase in fat cells that require more insulin, causing a vicious cycle of cravings, blood sugar and insulin spikes.

Some of the foods to avoid include: white bread, rice, pasta, corn, potatoes, cereal, fried foods, soda, diet soda, most bottled fruit juices, pastries, sweets, ice cream, vegetable oils (including canola oil!), tap water, and alcohol.

For me, that was pretty easy because my mother and daughter prepared all of my meals when I first got out of the hospital. :-)

Now, that doesn't mean that you have to avoid all of your favorite foods completely! You just have to learn how to eat these foods the "right way" to prevent or reduce the blood sugar spikes.

For example, when I was told to avoid sweets, especially ice cream, I was really disappointed.  But, through my research in biochemistry, I learned how to eat the ice cream the "right way" to reduce the spikes -- more about that later in my book.

FYI: We're the only program that I'm aware of that shows you how to enjoy your favorite comfort foods and integrate them as part of your meal plan. Why? Because it's unrealistic to expect most people to completely avoid eating some of their favorite foods at least once in a while!

But, you can't just eat these foods arbitrarily and expect to maintain control of your blood sugar-- they have to be part of a balanced, nutrient dense program such as the Death to Diabetes Nutritional Program.

4. Exercise on a consistent basis to control your Type 2 diabetes.

Exercise helps the body to burn off the excess glucose in our blood. Exercise also helps the body to remove toxins from our cells and tissues.

But, if you haven't exercised in a while, start slowly -- don't overdo it the first few times. Give your body some time to get used to moving again.

Try to exercise at least 4 to 5 times a week, 25 to 30 minutes duration.

I had a difficult time exercising in the beginning because I didn't have the energy. But, as I ate more healthy foods I got better andwas eventually able to exercise two times a day!

5. Perform blood glucose testing at least 3 to 4 times a day.

Yeah, I know -- pricking your finger several times a day isn't much fun. Right?

But, you need to measure your blood sugar to ensure you know what dosage of insulin or other medication to take.

More importantly, testing your blood sugar will let you know if you're eating the right foods. 

And, if you record your readings, you can use that data to gradually wean off the drugs! 

I really didn't like pricking my finger several times a day. Lucky for me, one of the blood glucose monitor companies had just come out with a new blood glucose monitor.

This new monitor allowed me to test using my arm, which was not as sensitive as my fingers. Ironically, this allowed me to test more frequently and understand what the diabetes was doing to me. 

Without the testing (and data analysis), I wouldn't have been able to figure out how to wean off the insulin. So, being an engineer who loves numbers turned out to be a blessing for me. :-) 

Of course, you don't have to be an engineer and do the data analysis. All you have to do is just follow the instructions in my book.

6. Take a vitamin/mineral supplement to complement what you're eating.

I usually don't mention taking a vitamin/mineral supplements because some people use this as an excuse for eating whatever they want.  Yeah, that doesn't work. :-)

Eating junk food and taking a vitamin supplement will do nothing for you. That's why they're called supplements -- they supplement what you're eating.

Make sure that your supplements are as close to being food-based as possible. Avoid all synthetic vitamins!

Some of the key supplements include:

  • chromium
  • unprocessed cod liver oil
  • CoQ10
  • lipoic acid
  • magnesium
  • probiotics
  • Vitamin D3

I started with a wholefood-based multivitamin. Then, later I added alpha lipoic acid and Vitamin D3.

7. Cleanse and detox periodically.

You may not think that detoxification is important, but it helps to remove accumulated toxins and other chemicals from your cells and tissues.

Normally, your liver, kidneys, and colon do most of the work in removing toxins and chemicals from your body. But, if you're fighting a disease like Type 2 diabetes, your organs may need some help. 

I wasn't too keen on this whole detoxing thing. I tended to associate detox with alcohol and other drugs.

But, once I tried a green detox smoothie --- Wow! I don't want to get too graphic here, but, I felt like I lost 20 pounds!

And, afterwards, I had so much more energy! Plus, it helped to stabilize my blood sugar readings a lot faster.

8. Get some emotional support.

This is a biggee. Without the support that I received from my family, friends, co-workers, doctors and nurses, I would not be here today -- period,  

It is very difficult if not impossible trying to fight this disease by yourself. But, there are many ways to seek support:

  • Reach out to family members or a close friend for their emotional support.
  • If you live far away from family members and friends, then, join a local or online diabetic support group.
  • Get quality sleep and rest.
  • Use prayer and medication to tap into your inner spirit.
  • See a diabetes health coach or counselor.

Just as important, avoid the drama people -- the drama kings and drama queens who are negative thinkers and tend to stir up trouble wherever they are. 

Once you start to feel better, become a community volunteer and help other diabetics in your church or family. You'll be pleasantly surprised how good you'll feel after helping someone.

9. Visit your doctor on a regular basis.

If you don't like doctor appointments or if you don't get along with your doctor, you should still see him/her at least once or twice a year.

It's very important that you see your doctor on a regular basis in order to get the necessary blood tests, physical exam and other tests to see how your progressing.

If you want to get more out of your appointments, the most important thing that you can do is to prepare yourself before the appointment.

Write down your top 3 questions and take a notepad; and, take your journal and blood sugar readings with you.

If you're taking any medications, keep a chart of your meds and their dosages, including when you started taking each drug,  and if you experienced any side effects.

In addition, make sure that you get at least one complete physical exam every year.

I used this program myself. I went from the V.A.doctor wanting to put me on more meds to drug free. I have been a diabetic for over 15 years. On pills for the whole 15 years and shots for the past 3 years ... I have been off shots since August 26th and off pills for 15 days. It is now the 21st of September 2013. I am not saying that everyone can do this as fast as I have, but I will say if you to are committed and strict, you can be drug free as well ... 

Since Sept 3rd 2013 I have 4 of my friends and my sister have started this program. All are having amazing results. Oh!!!!! The bonus to this..... I have lost over 30 pounds in this time and losing more each week. The draw back is..... You guessed it.... I need to buy smaller clothes. Nice problem to have if you ask me. 

Also I am almost 55 years old and I have as much energy now as I did in my 30's. How wonderful life can be after diabetes is gone.

By the Way!!!!!! My diabetic doctor..... was blown away with amazement....... And is now totally supporting me. Praise God! Can't wait to see what my V.A. doctor says..... this should be good.....lol!

I discovered this book when I received a junk email about reversing diabetes ... Before, he's taking 8 medicines everyday for his blood sugar, high blood pressure, cholesterol, blood clots and Alzheimer meds because he just had three strokes that impaired his memory.

And we started his juicing and diet. And as of this day, Oct 29, 2012. He's taking only 2 medicines. We reduced his medicine for blood clots from two to one, and blood sugar meds from two to one also. But we are planning to remove the blood sugar med totally this November ... His waist line was 45 last July and now he's down to 34.

I found this material on Youtube after being diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic in November 2011. My Glucose reading was well over 542 and my A1C was 14. I bought the book in January 2012 and I called Mr McCulley on the phone. He was kind enough to chat with me. 

His book started me on my journey. He gives you the answers in his book. The phone conversation was more valuable to me more than anything. I would strongly suggest any diabetic to start with his material. This book gives you hope to fight and I know he's doing the work of God. He told me the real deal and I'm thankful. 

I went to the Dr. on March 23,2012 and the report was I'm not diabetic! Glucose was 107 after a nice hardly lunch and my A1C was 5.4 The Dr was stunned but I thank God for Mr. McCulley taking a stand for truth and giving it to the world. I knew this was the right book for me and if you are serious about getting rid of diabetes in your life this is a great place to start. This book should be in every house.

October 6, 2010 my life changed drastically: I woke up to find my world a gray blur. That was all I could see. I was diagnosed 3 days later as a Type 2 diabetic, with an A1C of 10.1 and BG levels in the 400's. I cried. A few weeks later a friend sent me the book, Death to Diabetes, by Dewayne McCulley.  When I told my doctor what I was doing, she said GOOD LUCK. Her experience is most diabetics simply take the drugs and continue on....to go blind, lose their feet, their kidneys fail.....

One year later, my A1C score was 5.0, I had lost 30 lbs, my vision was BETTER than before I lost it, and my BG levels were under 120. ... When I first bought this book no one believed that it would change my life ... In June of 2011 I was on 6 different medications. 2 for Diabetes, 2 for Cholesterol, 1 for high blood pressure and 1 for depression. I was overweight and needed an inhaler to help me breath.

Within 3 months of following the guide lines in the book, "DEATH TO DIABETES", I was drug free. Blood sugar levels readings are in the normal range, blood pressure readings are great, good reading on cholesterol, and 3 months ago I gave up the anti-depressant drugs with very little withdrawal problems. I have lost over 60lbs. 

Now 7 months later after following the suggestions in this book, my family, friends, nurses, and doctors are asking me. "What was the name of that book you were telling us about?"

Thanksgiving 2007 a family member tested my blood sugar. My number was 417. ... (I'm a Systems Engineer like the author of this book). ... Though my A1C was 10.7 and I got a few letters saying I would die if I didn't start taking the medication. ... Within another 6 months I had lost 60 lbs. 

Now its 3 years later - I do eat carbs and stuff like that now that I'm fully recovered. I back to a VERY NORMAL though HEALTHY diet ... My blood pressure also became normal - and that was from the weigh loss and better nutrition (it averaged 154/91 before, and 115/70 now). ... My blood-sugar now averages 100, and my BP 115/70. I feel fit and I sincerely thank you DeWayne McCulley (Systems Engineer!).

I purchased this book because I wasn't going to live with Diabetes Type 2 for the rest of my life. ... My doctor said "you have type 2 diabetes... take these pills twice a day and I'll see you in 6 months." For a whole year I took the pills, didn't really make any diet modifications and one year later I was really no better ...

In April of 2009 I purchased Death to Diabetes and devoured it ... On May 19th, I went in for another follow-up check-up. ... my blood sugar ... had now dropped to the 75-136 range ... my cholesterol went from 194 to 157 and my triglyceride level went from 105 to 58. I was taken off all medication by my doctor and have now really loved to enjoy the foods that are good for you. Without this book, it would never have happened. I needed a road map and this was perfect! It all just made perfect sense.

I might also add that when I read the verse that DeWayne referenced in the book: Hosea 4:6 "My people perish for lack of knowledge." I agree. Buy the book, get the knowledge and make a change ...

I was diagnosed as a diabetic with no prior family history and a BS reading of 536. The future looked bleak until I purchased this book. 3 or 4 months later my FBS blood sugar was down to to 83-105 average. A1C 5.5. It came down that much even without exercise.

The book gave me a sense of pride in taking care of my body. Instead of being happy for, me my doctor was indifferent and acted weird after he discovered that I had stopped giving myself those painful Lantus injections and taking Glyburide long ago. He reluctantly discontinued all BS medications asking how I had done it.

This book is very powerful, written by an engineering genius. He also addresses many other health issues attached to the disease. If you want to get your BS under control with a possible cure, this is the book to get, period.

This is a fantastic book on how to manage, control and perhaps reverse Type II Diabetes. ... In November 2007 I went to my doctor for my yearly physical exam and discovered that I had an A1C level of 7.5 and a cholesterol level of 267. After following the diet and exercise plan in this great book my progress report was excellent. I went back for a check-up in May 2008 and my doctor was very pleased and surprised. My A1C had gone from 7.5 to 5.8 and my cholesterol count went from 267 to 160.

Let me say first 2 Thumbs up! Mr. McCulley's book is a blessing. No nonsense, practical, factual and a blueprint for where to start ... this is the most complete and practical Step-by-step guide ... Remember he is an ex-diabetic who did beat the disease, I am myself is a diabetic & seeing the blood sugars numbers going down by following this book ... A must read for any diabetic that don't know where to begin ... Finally someone willing to tell us the truth about what makes us well. Remember you can beat this disease, not controlling, not reversing but BEAT IT!

This book has really changed my life.When I bought it four months ago my blood sugar was high, I was on metformin 2000g a day ... once I started the program I have never looked back ... I am no longer on metformin, my AC1 is going down nicely ... I have lost weight ... I am type 2 diabetic, but my chart from my doctors is saying I am nearly pre diabetic. I would recommend this book, it is saving my life.

I love, love this book. I compiled a binder with info and watched videos before purchasing the book.  This book provides a compass to steer people in the direction of lifetime health and toward the reversal of many chronic diseases. 

This book is insightful and inspiring. Wow, to think that you used your engineering skills and biochemistry to interpret data for obtaining and restoring one’s health is simply amazing. 

I think this is without a doubt one of the most interesting and well-documented books on diabetes that I have ever read! (And I've read a lot of them.)

This book empowered me with additional knowledge to make behavioral changes that impacted my health ...  As a result my complexion, energy, cholesterol, CRP have improved. My clothes fit better and for the first time in well, maybe the first time ever... I don't crave chocolate or starchy carbohydrates ... It doesn’t matter if you are a diabetic or not, I HIGHLY recommend this book. If you are a diabetic you no longer have to resign yourself to a life of chronic obesity and daily insulin injections. My nephew diagnosed as a diabetic and a possibility of kidney disease (NEPHROPATHY). He was put on the medication and started applying the principles in your book and he is no longer taking medication and is not a diabetic.

... After years of struggling with this, i was fortunate enough to be directed to videos of Dewayne McCulley ... The wealth of details he provides is in his awesome book called Death to Diabetes ... I have lost 30 lbs using the information from this book and watching the videos from Dewayne McCulley. The weight loss occurs within a few months. I am in my normal BMI range for a few months now thanks to this program. Also I am pleased to have been gradually lowering my A1C over the last six months. It gradually lowered from 5.9 mg/dL, 5.7 mg/dL to finally today of 5.5. mg/dL. For the first time in seven years it is in the normal range.

I am convinced that if someone deserves the Nobel Prize of Medicine there is no other person but Doctor/Engineer DeWayne McCulley. Yes! I call him DOCTOR!...
His research is so deep in the field of Diabetes and sooooo efficient that I can't believe it works! And it works! I was on Metformin and Insulin Lantus + Humalog for 11 years...It's now history ...
